The South Lemhi Joint School District #292 Board of Trustees announced Thursday the appointment of Patrick Manning as the district’s next Superintendent/Principal. Manning, a highly experienced rural education leader, will begin his new role on July 1.
Manning brings nearly 40 years of experience in education, including significant leadership in both Alaska and Idaho. Most recently, he served as Superintendent of the Nenana City School District in Alaska, where he also directed the statewide CyberLynx Correspondence Program — a distance learning initiative that provided educational access to students across Alaska’s vast and remote regions.
That expertise in delivering high-quality education to geographically isolated communities makes Manning especially well-suited for South Lemhi, which serves approximately 100–130 students across two schools: the PK–12 Leadore School campus and an elementary school in Tendoy. Located in one of Idaho’s most remote areas, the district requires a leader skilled at maximizing limited resources while fostering a strong sense of community.
Throughout his career, Manning has held roles as assistant superintendent, principal, teacher, and counselor in rural settings. He completed the National Superintendent Certification Program in 2023 and holds advanced degrees in educational administration and counseling, along with a superintendent endorsement from the University of Alaska Southeast. His accomplishments include securing a $100,000 U.S. Department of Energy grant for facility improvements and earning national recognition for student achievement.
“Patrick Manning brings the experience and leadership needed to navigate the unique challenges of rural education,” said Board Chair Thayne Kauer. “We are confident he will build on the strong foundation already in place and continue expanding opportunities for our students.”
Manning expressed enthusiasm about joining the South Lemhi community.
“I look forward to working with the board, staff, students, and families to support student success and build on the district’s strong traditions,” he said.
A Smooth and Stable Leadership Transition
The appointment concludes a thoughtfully managed leadership transition. Following the departure of former Superintendent Shane Johnston last July, the district enlisted retired administrator Shane Matson to serve as full-time, on-site interim administrator. The Idaho Association of School Administrators (IASA) also provided valuable part-time, remote support through Dr. Heather Williams serving as superintendent.
This collaborative approach ensures continuity, stability, and continued progress for students and staff during the transition. The district extends its sincere appreciation to Matson and Williams for their leadership and service to the South Lemhi community.
